The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was tasked this morning to respond to an incident where a boat was reported to have run aground on Lough Derg.
The volunteer unit was alerted at around 11.15am and requested to launch and assist the vessel which had ran aground at Bushy Island close to Mountshannon off the Clare shoreline.
There were four persons on board the vessel and all were found to be safe and well and wearing their life jackets.
The boat however was hard aground and a Coast Guard crew member was transferred on to the vessel to carry out an inspection to insure there was no ingress of water.
As the Coast Guard crew were preparing to tow the vessel to deeper water, the hire company which owns the vessel, arrived on scene and took over the recovery of the cruiser. The Coast Guard boat crew remained at the scene however.
By 12.15pm, the boat had been successfully removed from the sand bank and the Coast Guard crew were stood down and returned to base.
The incident was coordinated by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.
The Irish Coast Guard always advises, “if you see someone in difficulty on or near water, call 112/999 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
