Fire crews from Ennis, Ennistymon and Kilrush have been battling bog fires between Darragh and Kilmaley.
The fire was reported at around 4.00pm. On arrival, fire crews from Ennis realised they would require additional assistance and resources to tackle the blaze.
Fire appliances and personnel from Kilrush were initially sent to help out. As the fire quickly spread however, three further units were mobilised from Ennistymon station.
Changing winds swept flames up to 12 feet into the air sometimes forcing fire crews to retreat. As the flames raced across the landscape fire fighters battled to keep up with the fire.
Fire crews were also sent to investigate a report that the fire was getting dangerously close to one private home.
The Regional Fire Control Centre in Limerick confirmed that fire crews across the entire province of Munster have been fighting similar blazes for most of the day.
