Fisherman airlifted form trawler off Clare coast

12.15pm – The helicopter arrived at Shannon shortly before midday and the injured fisherman has been transported to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

Earlier:

An injured fisherman has been airlifted to hospital from a fishing trawler almost 300 kilometres off the west coast following a three hour mission.

The Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115, flew the long range medevac operation where conditions on scene were described as challenging.

The fishing trawler was 160 nautical miles (296 kilometres) west of Loop Head in Co Clare at the time.

Rescue 115 left Shannon shortly before 9.00am for the 75 minute flight to the scene.

The injured sailor is being flown to the helicopter base at Shannon where an ambulance is standing by. The helicopter is due to land at around midday.

The patient will be taken by road to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

The operation was coordinated by watch officers at the  Irish Coast Guard marine rescue sub centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.

Weather conditions on scene were described as challenging with winds exceeding 30 Knots (56 km/h) but well within the operating limits of the helicopter.
