A US-bound passenger flight turned around over the Atlantic in the early hours of this morning and diverted to Shannon Airport with a seriously ill woman.
EL AL flight ELY-15 was travelling from Tel Aviv in Israel to Boston in the US at the time.
The Boeing 767-300 jet had flown over Ireland and was about 230 kilometres west of Donegal when the flight made a U-turn.
The crew declared a medical emergency reporting they had a woman in her 30’s on board suffering a suspected miscarriage.
The flight landed shortly after 5.00am and was met at the terminal by airport staff and National Ambulance Service paramedics.
The woman was assessed and treated at the scene before being removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. Details of the woman’s condition are not known.
The flight resumed its journey shortly before 8.00am.
