Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a collision in Co Limerick in which two people were killed.
The collision, which involved a car and oil truck, occurred at around 10.45am on the N24 Limerick to Waterford road at Gortnadromin near the village of Dromkeen.
It’s understood that the victims are a married couple, a man in his 80’s and a woman in her 70’s, who had been visiting Ireland from the UK.
The vehicles are understood to have collided head-on and that the car overturned onto its roof following the impact. The two victims were trapped in the car and were pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
The driver of the lorry, a man in his 40’s, was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Units of the fire brigade from Cappamore along with ambulances from Limerick City responded to the incident. Several garda units attended the scene including members of the Roads Policing Unit who closed off the main N24 and diverted traffic away from the scene.
The crash site remains closed this evening to facilitate and examination of the crash site by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local Divisional scene of crime officers .
Gardaí have confirmed that the local Coroner has been notified and arrangements are being made for the bodies to be removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where post mortem examinations will be carried out.
