Putting out and cleaning up bonfires this weekend has cost Clare County Council an estimated €9,500.

Clare County Fire and Rescue Service responded to ten bonfire incidents across Co Clare on Sunday October 30th and Monday October 31st. Eight of these call-outs were in Ennis with the remaining two in Shannon and Kilrush.

For every call-out the fire and rescue service has two fire tenders, both fully staffed. The crew must first put out the fire and then the cleanup that follows also raises the cost of the bonfires for the local authority. The fee must be paid by the Council as the bonfires were lit in public commons and green areas.

It is a reduction on last year’s figures in which the fire and rescue service were called to sixteen bonfires across Co Clare at a cost of €15,500. 2014 saw a total on ten bonfires put out.
