Heavy hail and sleet affecting driving conditions on M18

The M18 has reopened after a short section of the motorway was closed following a road traffic collision earlier.

A second collision has now been reported in the same area where conditions are said to be dangerous. Heavy hail and sleet showers have been reported in several locations on the motorway.

The first incident, a single-vehicle crash, occurred at around 6.00pm in the southbound lanes of the motorway at junction 15 in Crusheen. The collision occurred at the interchange between the off and on ramps.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis and Shannon stations responded to the scene along with gardaí. The National Ambulance Service was also alerted.

It’s understood there were two adults and a number of children in the vehicle which collided with the crash barrier and spun around on the road. It’s believed an off-duty nurse, who came upon the scene, stopped to check whether anyone required help.

The road was closed for a short time while emergency services dealt with the incident and the car was recovered from the scene.

Soon after emergency services were stood down, they were alerted to another collision in the northbound lanes of the M18 also in the vicinity of junction 15 (Crusheen).

Further information is awaited on this incident….
