The Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner was over 300 kilometres south west of Ireland when the crew declared a medical emergency at around 5.00am.

The crew advised controllers that they wished to divert and land at Shannon and requested an ambulance be on standby for their arrival.

The flight landed safely shortly after 5.30am and was escorted to the terminal.

The passenger was assessed on board the aircraft before being removed to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) for treatment.

The flight continued its journey again at 7.20am.
