Lough Derg RNLI responded to their second call of the Bank Holiday weekend when they were requested to assist two adults and a child aboard a 27ft cruiser.

The volunteer crew was mobilised at around 4.30pm in Sunday after a boat was reported to be aground near Kilgarvan on the eastern shore of Lough Derg.

The lifeboat located the casualty vessel at 4.38pm and an RNLI volunteer was transferred across to the boat where all on board were found to be safe and unharmed and wearing their lifejackets.

The RNLI crew member made a thorough check of the cruiser and found that it was not holed, but had suffered damage to its propellers. The lifeboat took the cruiser off the rocks and towed it to Dromineer Harbour, where, at 6.15pm, it was safely tied alongside.

Owen Cavanagh, helm on the Lifeboat, said afterwards: “We would advise boat users to plan their passage before setting out, and take particular care to navigate the correct side of the navigation marks to avoid running aground.”

The Dromineer based lifeboat crew also responded to an incident on Saturday but was stood down while en route.

Kilrush RNLI successfully rescued four people on Sunday morning after their boat got into difficulty in the Shannon Estuary.

The Irish Coast Guard had issued a joint warning ahead of the Bank Holiday Weekend about water safety.

Anyone who sees somebody in difficulty should call 999/112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
