Man (20s) being treated for serious injuries following collision

Update: The R474 road has reopened.

GardaĆ­ have confirmed that the driver of the car, who was seriously injured, is a male in his 20s.

One person is in a serious condition in hospital following a single-vehicle road traffic collision in Co Clare this morning.

A section of the R474 remains closed following the incident which occurred at around 5.00am.

GardaĆ­, National Ambulance Service paramedics and units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station responded that the scene.

The vehicle collided with a crash barrier and left the road at Gortaganniv. Emergency crews had to use ladders to climb down an embankment to reach the casualty.

One person was removed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

It’s not clear whether there were any other persons in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

The R474 is currently closed between Inch Bridge and Kilmaley village.

A Garda spokesperson said: ā€œGardaĆ­ and emergency services attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic collision at Kilmaley Co. Clare , which occurred on Thursday 19th March, 2026 at approximately 5:00am.

The male driver of the vehicle, aged in his 20’s, was conveyed to University Hospital Limerick by ambulance for treatment of injuries believed to be serious at this time.

The road was temporarily closed, and has since reopened. No additional injuries were reported at the time.

Investigations are ongoing.ā€
