A member of the group raised the alarm at around 9pm using a mobile phone.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was initially requested to respond to the incident while the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter was also tasked to the scene.

The casualty was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Killaloe unit of the Coast Guard assisted the crew of a cruise boat that ran aground on Lough Derg earlier.

There were two people on board the 30-foot cruiser when it got into difficulty shortly before 6.00pm near Killaloe.

The crew of the Killaloe Coast Guard boat located the boat and towed to deeper water and later to Killaloe.

Volunteers used their remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to check the vessel for any damage.
