Wednesday, 9.15pm – A second Jet2 aircraft arrived in Shannon this evening from East Midlands Airport at 7.45pm. It’s understood this flight was carried replacement crew members so the original flight could continue to its destination.

The flight resumed its journey to Tenerife shortly before 9.00pm.

Earlier: A male in his late teens is being questioned by Gardaí after he was arrested on board a flight that diverted to Shannon Airport earlier this evening.

The 19-year-old male had to be forcibly removed from the aircraft following an incident during which a woman and man were allegedly assaulted.

A video has since appeared online apparently showing a person in handcuffs, with his legs bound with an aircraft safety belt, being dragged of the aircraft.

Jet 2 Holidays flight LS-155 was travelling from Glasgow, Scotland to Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands and was about 300 kilometres off the south coast of Ireland when the crew turned around. There were 202 passengers and crew on board the flight.

The flight crew contacted air traffic controllers in Shannon and advised them of their situation and indicated they would be turning around and wished to divert to Shannon Airport.

The crew of the Boeing 737-800 series jet advised controllers that they had a ‘disruptive passenger’ on board and that ‘fighting’ had broken out in the passenger cabin. The crew said they would need ‘police on arrival’ and Gardaí based in the airport were alerted.

In a further update to air traffic controllers, the flight crew confirmed there had been ‘some injuries’ in the cabin and requested medical assistance. The National Ambulance Service was then alerted and asked to mobilised resources to the airport.

The flight touched down at 5.44pm and was met at the terminal by airport staff, Gardaí and paramedics.

After the flight crew confirmed they would be making an ‘overweight landing’, Shannon Airport’s Fire and Rescue Service was alerted and placed on standby. Emergency vehicles pursued the aircraft along the runway after it landed. This is standard procedure at Shannon for overweight landings which can result in an aircraft’s braking system overheating.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí at Shannon have arrested an individual following an incident on board a aircraft that diverted to Shannon Airport.

Shortly after 5:30pm, Gardaí were alerted following reports of a disturbance on a flight from Glasgow to Tenerife. The aircraft diverted to Shannon Airport, where Gardaí boarded the plane. During the incident, a woman in her 20s was assaulted.

A male in his late teens was arrested in connection with the incident under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in County Clare. Investigations are ongoing.”

A spokespersons for Jet2Holidays confirmed: “We can confirm that flight LS155 from Glasgow to Tenerife has diverted to Shannon Airport this afternoon so that police could offload a disruptive passenger.”
