A man is recovering in hospital after he was dramatically rescued from a river in Ennis early today.
The alarm was raised at around 3.20am when a passerby alerted the emergency services.
A man was reported to have been seen in the River Fergus near the Abbey Street carpark in the centre of Ennis.
Gardaí were first to respond while the ambulance service, fire brigade and Irish Coast Guard were alerted.
Two Gardaí spotted the man at the rear of Ennis Garda station, some distance from where he was first seen, and directed other services to the area.
Four units of the fire brigade from Ennis including members of the service’s Swiftwater Rescue Technician unit responded.
The man was taken from the fast flowing river after he had tried to grab onto a tree on the bank. He was rescued by two Gardaí and two fire service SRT members.
The man was handed over to ambulance paramedics and taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia.
