The search for a man reported missing at the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare yesterday was stood down last night after it was confirmed he was located safe and well.
The man in his late 20’s had taken a coach tour from Dublin to the popular Clare attraction early yesterday. It’s understood the coach arrived at the cliffs centre at around 11.30am and was due to depart again at 1.00pm.
When the man had not returned to the coach by the time it was due to leave, the driver waited for a time before departing. The driver informed authorities that the man had failed to return for the scheduled departure time.
Gardaà alerted the Irish Coast Guard and requested assistance carrying out a search of the area.
The Doolin unit of the volunteer service mobilised to the cliffs visitor centre and commenced searches of the cliff edge and lands in the area.
The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter flew along the coastline from Hags Head to Doolin in search of the man.
At around 7.30pm, search teams were stood down after it was confirmed that man been located safe and well.
It’s believed he got on another coach after he arrived back to the carpark to find the one he arrived on had already departed.
The man is understood to be a US national and a member of his country’s military who had been holidaying here from his base in Germany.
A Coast Guard spokesman said: “Teams commenced searches on the path North and South of the Cliffs while Ennistymon Gardaà also continued to try and locate the person. Sometime later another tour bus company confirmed that they had taken an extra passenger back to Dublin.”
