Man due in court following fatal road collision

Update: A man will appear in court this morning following a fatal road traffic collision on the N67 near Ballyvaughan on Thursday.

Gardaí have confirmed that a man in his 40s was arrested as part of this investigation and detained at a Garda station in County Clare. He has since been charged and will appear before Ennis District Court at today.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N67 at Ballyvaughan between 10:00am and 10:45am on Thursday 27th July 2023 are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Update:

Thursday, 8.45pm – The victim’s body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem examination is expected to be carried out.

A technical examination of the scene has been completed.

Earlier: One person has died following a road traffic collision in North Clare this morning.

The incident occurred at around 10.30am on the N67 Lisdoonvarna road less than a kilometre Ballyvaughan.

It’s understood that a car and motorcycle collided and that the motorcyclist, a man in his 70s, was fatally injured. It’s believed the occupants of the car, a family of tourists, were uninjured.

Gardaí, National Ambulance Service paramedics and crews from Clare County Fire and Rescue Service’s Ennistymon station responded to the incident.

The main N67 road will remain closed until a Garda Forensic Collision Investigation completes an examination of the scene.

Gardaí have confirmed that the victim has been formally identified and that his family have been informed of the tragedy. The driver of the car is also assisting Gardaí with their inquiries.

*The N67 is closed from Ballyvaughan village to the turn off for the Aillwee Cave.

Members of the Clare Garda Roads Policing Unit are investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
