One seriously injured in Newmarket on Fergus collision

One person is being treated in hospital for serious injuries following a road traffic collision in Newmarket on Fergus overnight.

A second casualty was also removed to hospital but is understood to have sustained minor injuries.

GardaĆ­, National Ambulance Service paramedics and three units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon station responded to the single-vehicle collision at around 10.45pm.

The incident occurred on the R458 (the old N18) between Ministers Cross and the junction with Lough Dash road. The route was closed following the collision while GardaĆ­ had warned motorists that it could remain closed overnight. The route was reopened however at around 5.00am once Garda Forensic Collision Investigators had completed a technical examination of the scene.

Two women, aged in their 60s and 70s, were taken to University Hospital Limerick where one remains in a serious condition.

GardaĆ­ are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

A spokesperson said: ā€œAny motorists who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating GardaĆ­.

Meanwhile, emergency services also responded to a collision involving a car and a bus on the N18 between junctions 4 (Cratloemoyle) and the Limerick Tunnel.

The collision occurred in the southbound carriageway and resulted in the closure of a section of the N18. Traffic was diverted off the route via the R445 towards Caherdavin Limerick City.

One person traveling in the car was removed to hospital for treatment while no injuries were reported to any persons on the bus.

GardaĆ­ are investigating the circumstances of both collisions.
