A pensioner was recovering in hospital last night after she had to be cut from the wreckage of her car in Co Clare.
The woman in her 70’s was left trapped in her car for over 45 minutes after she reportedly blacked out, lost control and collided with a tree.
The single-vehicle collision happened at around 5.15pm close to the national school in Tulla, Co Clare.
Two units of the fire brigade and an ambulance from Scarriff along with a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident. Gardaí closed the road while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Fire crews used specialist cutting equipment to carefully extricate the trapped woman from her car, an operation that took 30 minutes.
The woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment and while reported to have been not seriously hurt, her injuries were not believed to be life-threarening.
Garda crash investigators examined the scene before the car was removed for a technical examination.
