An elderly man was treated for smoke inhalation last night following a fire at his home near Newmarket on Fergus.
The fire was reported shortly after 6.00pm at a house at Ralahine South. Emergency services were told that the fire had broken out in a bedroom at the property.
Three units of the fire brigade along with Gardaí from Shannon responded to the scene. Two crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the house to ensure there were no persons inside.
While personnel worked to bring the blaze under control other fire fighters spoke with with a man in his 80’s whom they found to be suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
The man was administered oxygen by fire crews while he waited for an ambulance to arrive. The man was able to walk to the ambulance where he was treated by paramedics.
The fire is believed to have started accidentally.
