A report of a person being seen in a river in Ennis last night is now believed to have been a false alarm.
Gardaí received a call from a member of the public who believed they saw a person in the River Fergus.
Gardaí travelled to the area and commenced and requested assistance from Clare Civil Defence.
Civil Defence volunteers, including members of the unit’s specially trained swift-water rescue team, carried out searches from the riverbank using powerful lighting. The river was low at the time and too shallow to safely launch any boats.
The search was concentrated in the area of the river between the bridge at the Maid of Éireann and Woodquay.
Following a comprehensive search and with no sign of any person in the river or further reports, the search was stood down soon after 11.00pm.
