A woman has been airlifted to hospital following a single vehicle collision in Clare this afternoon.
The single-vehicle collision happened on the N68 Ennis to Kilrush road at Darragh at around 12.15pm.
The Toyota Avensis car left the road, collided with a tree before crashing over a ditch and into a field where it landed on it’s roof about 50 feet from the road.
The male driver was seriously injured while his female passenger was left trapped in the vehicle following the crash.
Three units of the fire brigade along with two ambulances and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident.
Paramedics quickly decided to request assistance from the Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) air ambulance.
While paramedics assessed and treated the injured driver fire crews set about stabilising the car so they could safely remove the trapped passenger.
After being trapped in the overturned car for over 45 minutes, the woman was carefully removed.
The air ambulance helicopter arrived at the scene where a landing site had been initially identified in a nearby quarry.
The crew however circled the crash scene and opted to land in a farmers field about 50 metres from the crashed car.
Paramedics and fire crews carried the stretcher to the waiting helicopter from the where the woman was airlifted to hospital.
The driver was transported to University Hospital Limerick by road ambulance. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The road remained closed until gardaí concluded their examination of the scene while the car was later removed from a technical examination.
Gardaí from Ennis are investigating the collision.
