The two-vehicle collision happened at around 1.50pm near Doolin on the R479 road between the village and the local national school.

Three ambulances and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit were mobilised to the incident along the Gardaí. Two units of the fire brigade from Ennistymon and an additional appliance and crew from Ennis were sent to the scene.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to remove the woman from one of the vehicles. It’s understood she had been visiting the area from overseas.

The Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) was requested to provide air support. The Athlone-based air ambulance, operated by the Irish Air Corps and National Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene. The carpark of the local school was safely secured to allow the helicopter land close to the scene.

The woman was airlifted to University Hospital Galway while the two children were taken to the same facility by road ambulance. The other occupants of the vehicles escaped injury and did not require hospitalisation.

The road remained closed until an examination of the scene was concluded. The two vehicles were later recovered from the scene and will undergo further technical examination.

Gardaí from Ennistymon are investigating the circumstances of the collision.
