Flight from Shannon diverts to Portugal with technical issue

A flight from Shannon to the Canary Islands had to divert to an airport in Portugal earlier today after the crew reported a ‘technical issue’ on board.

Ryanair flight FR-8170, a weekly service to La Palma on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, departed Shannon at 6.42am today. About two hours later, when the flight was about 150 kms west of Portugal, the crew requested clearance to divert to Faro Airport in the south of the country. The flight landed safely at 9.17am.

The airline has confirmed that the aircraft diverted because of a ‘minor technical issue.’ The flight resumed its journey to La Palma about two hours later.

The return flight has since departed Gran Canaria and is due in Shannon around 6.47pm according to the latest information on the Ryanair website. The flight was originally due in Shannon at 3.35pm.

A Ryanair spokesperson confirmed :”This flight from Shannon to Gran Canaria diverted to Faro due to a minor technical issue with the aircraft. The aircraft landed normally and was inspected by engineers. This flight departed for Gran Canaria at 11:30am local time.”

The return flight is now expected in Shannon at 6.35pm.
