Clare County Council has honoured Clare band Stockton’s Wing with a Civic Reception that celebrated a contribution to Irish and folk music in Ireland and abroad spanning 40 years.
Past and present members of the group, which was formed in Ennis in 1977, gathered at Áras Contae an Chláir along with Elected Members, Council officials, special guests from the world of music and entertainment, and family and friends.
Addressing the ceremony, Mayor of Clare Tom McNamara said, “Music is the heartbeat of Clare and Stockton’s Wing form part of that musical heritage.”
“From sharing a stage with Michael Jackson and Sammy Davis Junior to featuring in Jim Sheridan’s film The Field with Richard Harris, and from headlining concerts all over the world to producing 12 albums including several top ten singles, Stockton’s Wing truly is a band for all the ages.
“The people of Clare are proud of the group’s strong connections with the county and that is why the members of this Council are this evening giving official recognition to the band and its contribution to Irish culture over four decades,” added Mayor McNamara.
Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of Clare County Council, commented, “Time and time again over the past 40 years, Stockton’s Wing have produced quality music, a distinct sound, memorable live performances and always, a unique connection with music fans. The band is amongst a small number of Irish musical acts that have rightfully and forever claimed a place in the hearts of all Irish people. Here in Clare, we are proud of the group’s strong links with the county.”
The Civic Reception concluded with a performance by Stockton’s Wing.
