Garda divers yesterday joined the search for a man believed to have fallen from a cliff in Co Clare.
Volunteers from the Doolin and Kilkee units of the Irish Coast Guard have been searching for the man in his 30’s since the alarm was raised on Monday afternoon.
A group tourists walking along a popular cliff top trail discovered a bag with some personal property close to Hags Head at the southern end of the Cliffs of Moher.
The bag was taken to the visitor centre at the Cliffs of Moher and handed over to staff who raised the alarm.
Gardaí travelled to the area and discovered a car which they traced back to a man understood to be from Co Tipperary but who had been living in Clare.
Gardaí contacted the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry requesting assistance with a search of the area.
Coast Guard personnel have carried out sea and coastal searches from Doolin to Doonbeg since they were first alerted while the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115, has also carried out several aerial searches.
Yesterday (Thursday) search teams were joined by members of the Garda Water Unit who were taken by Coast Guard boat to the missing man’s last known location.
Members of the missing man’s family also travelled to the area during the week.
Garda divers are expected to resume their efforts this morning while Coast Guard personnel will continue their water and land based searches.
