Gardaí investigate incident of ‘theft by deception’

Gardaí in Ennis are investigating an incident of deception that occurred last Tuesday, the 23rd September in the Aldi car park on Francis Street at approximately 3pm.

The injured party was parked in the car park waiting for a family member that was shopping. A large dark van pulled up beside them and asked them to buy a box set of knives.

The driver of the large dark van was very insistent and the injured party was coerced into giving him money for the knives.

Crime Prevention Officer of Clare Sergeant Catriona Holohan said: “This matter is being fully investigated by Ennis Gardaí and if this individual approached you please do not hesitate to come forward and make a report. The male was described as well built and in his 40’s.

Gardaí are also appealing to anyone that may have witnessed this incident or maybe you were parked in the Aldi Car-Park. If you were and have footage or if you have any information regarding this deception, please contact Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the 28th September, a white Toyota Vitz was stolen from the Jetland Shopping Centre, Ennis Road in Limerick.

Later that evening the stolen vehicle was used in a theft at a service station in the Killaloe area. The culprits in this case filled the vehicle with diesel and drove off without paying for the fuel. We are appealing to your listeners today, please be extra vigilant.

Sgt Holohan said: “This vehicle may be used to commit further crimes. If anyone observes a white Toyota Vitz acting in a suspicious manner, in a place that it should not be or maybe you have observed it late at night or in around a farmyard. If you have any information please do not hesitate to contact your local Garda Station or the Garda Emergency Line on 999/112.
