‘Have Your Say’ on possible pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street

Clare County Council is currently considering options around the pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street in Ennis and is asking the public to have their say.

Ahead of drawing up plans for possible pedestrianisation measures, Ennis Municipal District of the Council has provided an online survey asking residents, businesses and visitors to the county town for their feedback on full or partial pedestrianisation. Printed versions of the survey will also be available.

O’Connell Street is currently closed to all vehicles until February 16, 2026, allowing the public to familiarise themselves of the new streetscape following the completion of the multimillion-euro Public Realm work.

During this period, Clare County Council invites the public, the business community, and visitors to Ennis to share their views on future access, traffic flow, and pedestrianisation of O’Connell Street through the online survey.

The online survey will go live on the Clare County Council website (clarecoco.ie: Have Your Say) from today December 8, 2025, until January 4, 2026, with physical copies of the survey available at council buildings including libraries.

Clare County Council Director of Service for Ennis MD, Jason Murphy, said, “This period before and after Christmas is a huge opportunity for businesses, shoppers, visitors, and the local community to experience O’Connell Street as a pedestrianised street and offers them the time to provide informed feedback on how our main thoroughfare is used in the future.”

Mayor of Ennis Cllr Mary Howard added, “I encourage everyone to take part in this important consultation. Your feedback will play a vital role in shaping the future of O’Connell Street and ensuring it meets the needs of our community. Together, we can create a vibrant, welcoming town centre that works for all.”
