Due to the detection of of low levels of Cryptosporidium in the water supply, Irish Water implemented a boil water notice in July 2016 to three hundred and four households in the Burren area. These are served by the Turlough Water Supply.

Cryptosporidium is a genus of apicomplexan parasitic alveolates that can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal illness.

A spokesperson for Irish Water told The Clare Herald. “Since this issue was identified, Irish Water has prioritised the completion of remedial works at this water treatment plant and has installed new Ultraviolet treatment and filtration units. The commissioning of these new units is continuing, which includes gathering the data required by the HSE before the Boil Water Notice can be lifted.

“Irish Water would like to thank those customers affected for their cooperation and assure them that we will continue to work with Clare County Council and liaise with the HSE with a view to lifting the Boil Water Notice as soon as is safe to do so”.

Meanwhile twenty premises served under the Carron Water Supply have recently had their boil water notice removed after seven months. This was following completion of a number of remedial works at the water treatment plant and the subsequent satisfactory monitoring results.
