Motorcyclist injured in Shannon road traffic collision

A motorcyclist is recovering in hospital following a road traffic collision in Shannon this afternoon.

The incident, which involved a motorcycle and an SUV, occurred at around 2.30pm at the junction of Smithstown Road and Bóthar Na Luachra.

The National Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance and paramedic response vehicle to the scene while units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon station were also mobilised along with Gardaí.

Additional crews from Ennis fire station were also mobilised to the incident but were stood down en route.

A male motorcyclist was assessed at the scene before being removed to University Hospital Limerick for further treatment. There is no information about his condition. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.

The junction, which had been closed for a time, has since reopened.

Meanwhile, while emergency services dealt with that incident, they were alerted to a car fire at Fenloe between Newmarket on Fergus and Kilmurry.

Fire crews were reassigned from the road collision that the second incident.

On arrival at the scene, they found a vehicle well alight. The driver had manage to pull the car off the road before exiting the vehicle.

Fire crews brought the fire under control however the car was destroyed. The driver sustained burns to a forearm and was treated at the scene by fire service emergency first responders.

When the National Ambulance Service could not provide an estimated time of arrival for an ambulance, a family member arrived to take the man for medical attention. No one else was injured in the incident.
