One hospitalised after single vehicle collision on M18

One person has been taken to hospital following a single-vehicle rollover road traffic collision on the M18 near Gort this afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 3.30pm at Ballyboy in the northbound lanes of the motorway just south of Gort. The vehicle is understood to have lost control and mounted the grass verge before overturning onto its roof and skidding across the motorway into lane 2.

Units of Galway Fire and Rescue Service from Gort station as well as Clare County Fire and Rescue Service crews from Ennis station responded to the incident along with Gardaí and National Ambulance Service paramedics.

The motorway was promptly closed while emergency services assessed and dealt with the incident. When it was confirmed that there was no one seriously hurt, fire crews implemented an emergency traffic management system and opened the hard shoulder to traffic.

The driver and sole occupant of the car was assessed by paramedics and later taken to hospital for treatment. It’s understood however that this was only as a precaution and that the motorist was not seriously injured.

Once the vehicle had been recovered and the scene cleared of debris, the motorway was full reopened shortly before 5.00pm.
