Killaloe Coast Guard tows cruiser with engine trouble

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was called into action this afternoon following reports that a vessel had suffered engine problems and was adrift on Lough Derg.

The alarm was raised shortly after midday when watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry paged the volunteer crew.

The team was requested to respond to assist a 31 foot cruiser with engine difficulty south of Scilly Island on Lough Derg. The vessel, with two persons on board, was said to be drifting in a northeastern wind of force 2-3.

The boat crew launched from the Coast Guard base at Pier Head, Killaloe and reached the scene within 7 minutes of launching. Once alongside the casualty vessel,  a Coast Guard member was transferred to the cruiser and a tow line was set up.

The vessel was then taken on tow back to Killaloe where a shore team was on hand to assist in the safe mooring of the vessel.
