At the time, volunteers from the Dromineer-based RNLI lifeboat had been out on exercise when they noticed a boat adrift within Garrykennedy Harbour.
When the lifeboat crew enquired whether all was well and of the people on board needed assistance, the skipper said they had engine failure and were unable to get to their berth.
The lifeboat crew informed watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry that they were responding to assist two persons getting their vessel to their mooring berth.
