Man airlifted to hospital after cliff fall in Lahinch

A man in his 20s has been airlifted to hospital after he fell from cliff in North Clare last night.

The alarm was raised shortly after 10.15pm when emergency services were alerted to an incident in Lahinch. It was reported that a male tourist in his 20s had fallen fromĀ  a 7 metre (23 foot) high cliff at the Miltown Malbay Road carpark in the town.

A multi-agency search and rescue operation was promptly mounted to locate and recover the casualty.

GardaĆ­, Irish Coast Guard personnel from Doolin, Clare County Fire and Rescue Service crews from Ennistymon station and National Ambulance Service paramedics all responded to the incident.

On arrival at the scene, fire service personnel made their way to the cliff base where they located the injured man on the rocks. They were joined by Coast Guard personnel and ambulance paramedics.

In the meantime, the Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter – Rescue 115 – was tasked and requested to respond to the incident.

The helicopter’s winchman/paramedic was lowered to the cliff base. The casualty was assessed and treated before being placed on a stretcher and prepared for winching on board the helicopter.

Shortly after midnight, the casualty was airlifted from the cliff base to University Hospital Galway for treatment. The extent of his injuries is not known.
