New QR code to aid recruitment of Coast Guard volunteers

The Irish Coast Guard has introduced a new streamlined initiative to make it easier for members of the public to express an interest in becoming a volunteer member of one the four principle blue light emergency services.

The Doolin unit was activated over 90 times in 2024 with multiple boats launches; numerous protracted missing person searches and other callouts in support of the other blue light services.

The Doolin unit has had a lot of enquiries from members of the public since storm Eówyn and are about to take on several new members.

The Irish Coast Guard is always looking for suitable candidates and would encourage anyone who has any interest in finding out more to scan the QR code. This QR code makes it less time consuming and very straightforward.

This is an organisation-wide initiative and will work for any Coast Guard team, including our colleagues in the Killaloe and Kilkee units.

Coast Guard Unit – Expression of Interest in the Role of Volunteer

The Irish Coast Guard (IRCG) regularly recruits volunteers across our 44 Coast Guard Units.

As a member of a Coast Guard Unit, you’ll be part of a team of 1,000 highly dedicated search and rescue specialists saving lives and rendering vital assistance to the public in communities across Ireland.

The primary role of a Coast Guard Unit is to respond to search and rescue incidents in the maritime domain. Maritime Search and Rescue is the activity of responding to a tasking related to locating and recovering persons in distress, potential distress or missing within the maritime domain, and delivering them to a place of safety.

The role of a Volunteer within the IRCG is both a challenging and rewarding one. What we ask for of you is:

· A commitment to participate in regular training and incident response.
· A robust adherence to our safety management system, policies and procedures
· A strong sense of teamwork, respect for your colleagues, pride in the service we deliver and service to our communities.
· An ambition to be part of a high performing team, upskill and contribute to a positive volunteering environment and organisational culture.

The Irish Coast Guard’s commitment to you is to provide a rewarding role in a highly dedicated search and rescue team, a safe operating environment and the training, equipment and processes necessary to deliver a best-in-class maritime emergency service.
