Search and Rescue volunteers save horse from river

Members of a volunteer Search and Rescue unit spent several hours today trying to help a young horse which had gotten into difficulty in a local river in Bunratty.

The horse was spotted in the Ratty River close to the village this afternoon. Volunteers from Bunratty Search and Rescue launched a rescue boat set out to try and save the animal.

After three hours, with a rope around the its neck, the crew members managed to coax the exhausted horse to swim alongside their boat and back to the slipway at their base.

They were thenable to safely recover the horse from the water and called a vet to check the animal to ensure it hadn’t been injured.

Staff at Bunratty Folk Park later took the horse in will care for it until its owners are located.
