A search will resume this morning for a man believed to have fallen from a cliff in Co Clare.

The alarm was raised early on Monday afternoon after tourists discovered a bag with some personal property on the cliff edge close to Hags Head at the southern end of the Cliffs of Moher.

The bag was taken to the visitor centre at the Cliffs of Moher and handed over to staff who raised the alarm.

Gardaí travelled to the area and discovered a car which they traced back to a man in his 30’s understood to be from Co Tipperary but living in Clare.

Gardaí contacted the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry requesting assistance with a search of the area.

The Doolin and Kilkee units of the Coast Guard were requested to travel to the area where both land and sea searches were carried out.

The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115, was also requested to carry out an aerial search. When nothing was found by late evening the search was stood down.

Coast Guard volunteers and Gardaí gathered again yesterday to resume the search while the search and rescue helicopter also carried out further sweeps at low tide late yesterday evening.

Members of the missing man’s family also travelled to the area yesterday.

The search was expected to resume early today.
