Shannon has been named as one of the sixth cleanest town in Ireland while Ennis made the top fifteen.
In the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) league survey, the County town made a significant improvement from their ranking of thirty second twelve months ago, Shannon equally recorded a big climb from 2015 figures as it was deemed cleaner than most European norms.
Independent assessments of towns is completed by An Taisce as part of the IBAL survey based on international grading standards. Cities were also included in the survey with Kilkenny top of the list followed by Enniscorthy, Kildare and Waterford.
Top ranking sites in Shannon included the Leisure Centre and Skycourt Shopping Centre while the N19 approach from Shannon Airport and N18 exit to the town were praised for how well they had been maintained.
Key to Ennis’ climb up the rankings were positive reports from residential areas such as Hermitage, while Parnell Street was noted as being “generally very clean”. However Westway Business Park was highlighted as a seriously littered site.
