The west Clare town of Kilrush is one step closer to having a brand new school.

That’s according to Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market & Data Protection Pat Breen who said the site for a new school building for Gaelscoil Uí Choimín, Kilrush has now been secured.

Minister Breen, who invited the then Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton to visit the school with him earlier this year said, “this is a major step forward in securing the much needed new school building for Kilrush.”

“The Department of Education, through the offices of Clare County Council, has now purchased a well know site in the town of Kilrush which will be developed into Gaelscoil UíChoimin, and will I hope serve the children of Kilrush for generations to come,” added the Clare minister of state.

“When I visited the school earlier this year I was struck by how small the classrooms were and the urgent need for a larger school building. I am delighted therefore that the site of the school building has now been secured, and look forward to continuing to work with the Board of Management in 2019 to ensure the new school is open as soon as possible.”

“There are currently 62 students been taught in the gaelscoil in Kilrush, but with the right building it has the potential to attract many more students. Already demand for places in the gaelscoil in Kilrush outweighs capacity, so the building will also serve a growing need in west Clare,” he said.

“I would like to congratulate the staff, board of management and the whole school community for their work to date on not only securing a new school for Kilrush, but also for their dedication to ensuring the continuous revival of the Irish language in west Clare,” the Minister added.
