An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted approval for the proposed upgrade and enhancement of facilities at Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) and Mountshannon Village.
This planning permission is another step forward in Clare County Council’s proposal to further enhance and develop the island and village as a premier cultural and tourism destination, showcasing the rich heritage and natural beauty of the area.
The planning permission gave the green light for the construction of welfare pods, including a weather shelter, water closets, and a staff rest room principally made up of prefabricated timber components. The existing jetty to also be upgraded.
The planning permission will also allow for a new carpark in Mountshannon village, alongside upgrades to Mountshannon Harbour carpark and landscaping enhancements. A future proof visitor centre was also part of the planning approval.
The planning and design project was funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht as part of the RRDF 2 funding measure and is a key part of Clare County Council’s commitment to sustainable tourism and aligns with national, regional and local strategies, including the National Planning Framework, Project Ireland 2040, the Shannon Tourism Masterplan and the Clare Tourism Strategy 2030.
Having received planning permission the development of this project is now subject to further funding.
Senior Executive Officer for Tourism at Clare County Council Deirdre O’Shea, said, “The new development, subject to funding received, will further enhance the newly opened Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience which celebrates the unique cultural and natural heritage of Holy Island. This planning and design process is committed to ensuring this development is carried out sustainably, preserving the beauty and history of this iconic site for generations to come”.
