Work begins on Newmarket-on-Fergus wastewater treatment plant

Uisce Éireann has commenced works to upgrade the local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Newmarket on Fergus, Co Clare.

This project will bring many benefits straight to local businesses, homes and neighbouring communities as well as improving the health and integrity of the environment and associated conservation habitats. This project will also protect recreational waters for fishing and boating activities and ensure compliance with Irish and EU legislation.

Uisce Éireann, are committed to giving communities like Newmarket-on-Fergus the infrastructure they need to grow and develop into the future.

Uisce Eireann Programme Manager, Angus Hall, celebrates this news, saying: “We are excited to be getting work started in Newmarket-on-Fergus. We know how much communities like Newmarket-on-Fergus need these essential upgrades, to allow them to thrive. It is more important than ever for Uisce Eireann to help provide growth in these areas; while also improving the environment.”

This project will involve upgrades to the existing WWTP, construction of a new outfall location to the River Rine, construction of a new rising main, new below-ground pumping station, and new combined sewer overflow storage tank.

To protect the safety of the community and our crews, while also delivering the project on time, traffic management will be in place along the R458, Ennis Road. Local and emergency access will always be provided.

Glanua is carrying out these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, and works are due to complete in 2028.
