An exuberant display from Dublin in the opening half of Round Two of the U16A All Ireland Championship ensured victory for the home side over Clare on Sunday afternoon
Dublin 1-14
Clare 1-8
Venue: Naomh Mearnóg
Six points was the difference as Clare’s second outing in the U16 All-Ireland Championship saw them lose out to Dublin. A storming opening saw the Dubs register 1-4 on the board with Jessica McClelland and Ciara Holland causing the damage.
Dublin grabbed their goal in the eigth minute, a free from full back Rebecca Lewis travelled to the square and in the scramble McClelland struck to the back of the Clare net. Robyn Conway set up Bridin Dinan for Clare’s opening score shortly after. Dinan converted a free just before Clare lost Laoise Ryan to injury with eighteen minutes played. Another Dinan free preceded a brace for the Dubs who went in with leading 1-08 0-03 at half-time.
Holland landed a free for the Dubs on the resumption and Mary Enright won the resulting puckout which she fed forward to Aoife Power, with Power splitting the posts. Dublin’s Laura Quinn pointed from play and again Clare won the puckout and moved play forward. A foul on Muireann Scanlon saw Power convert a free. Quinn pointed again at the other end in the fortieth minute to see the Dubs lead by 9 points.
Clare moved forward and with Dinan landing the ball in the square, Enright finished to the back of the net. A Dinan sideline was sent short to Power who split the posts. Power and Holland traded scores with Holland’s free Dublin’s first score in fifteen minutes. With the clock ticking down Holland converted a long range free to extend the lead to six points. Holland and Conway both exchanged points in the closing minutes allowing Dublin take the win.
Dublin were physical throughout and referee Peter Dowd’s application of the advantage rule proved frustrating for Clare, as the Meath man gifted Dublin 4 points from advantage whereas in contrast advantage was not granted once in the 65 or so minutes of play to the Banner girls. Clare were well served by Roisin Minogue in the back line, with Bridin Dinan working hard throughout, upfront Aoife Power, Robyn Conway and Mary Enright were industrious in keeping the Clare scoreboard ticking over.
