Avenue United B wear their underdogs tag going into Saturday evening’s Prego Menswear Clare Cup Final against Newmarket Celtic, their manager Richie O’Grady says their embracing the opportunity.
Speaking to Clare FM, the Avenue boss is under no illusions to the scale of their task this weekend. “We’re huge huge underdogs, we don’t mind the underdogs tag, we don’t mind it all, we’ll just go in and hopefully do our best and hopefully if we perform on the day we might have some bit of a chance if Newmarket don’t perform to the level they can but look anyone will tell you who knows anything about Clare soccer that it’s going to be a huge task”.
The club continues to be very successful in the schoolboys leagues and O’Grady is hoping the familiarity of tasting success in the County Grounds will drive younger members of his squad on Saturday.
“It gives the older lads a boost. I think we’ve four or five youths on the panel, I think there’s seven or eight lads altogether that this is their first ever experience playing Junior soccer which is huge and to get a Cup final for those lads is massive but they’ve been with our underage structure all the way up, played all the way up from Academy level and they’re used to playing finals out in Doora, big days and they’re used to winning finals in Doora so hopefully they can go out with that mindset on Saturday and show up”.
Kick-off is at 18:30 in the County Grounds, Doora on Saturday evening.
