U16 camogie championship commences

The U16 Camogie Championship commenced this week around Clare, Scariff-Ogonnelloe, Feakle-Killanena and St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield opened their accounts with wins.

While in the U16 B Eire Og, Kilmaley and Ballyea enjoyed victories also. Whitegate and Clooney-Quin comfortable recorded triumphant wins with impressive tallies on the scoreboard in the U16 C Championship.

Scariff-Ogonnelloe 4-8 Inagh-Kilnamona 0-3
Venue: Kilnamona

Scariff Ogonnelloe enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Inagh Kilnamona in round one of the under 16A Championship, on a scoreline of 4-08 to 0-03 in Kilnamona on Wednesday.
Scariff Ogonnelloe utilised the strong gale and rushed into a 2-3 . Cliona McNamara Aoife Power and Linda Daly grabbed themselves goals and had Scariff Ogonnelloe well ahead at half time.

The home side couldn’t get a stronghold in this fixture but battle hard throughout, Laoise Ryan and Michelle Mescall, Roisin Mahony and Cathy Cullinan fought hard for the combo who has quite a young side, while Susan Daly, Lynda Daly, Cliona Mc Namara and Aoife Power impressed for the deserved winners.

Feakle-Killanena 3-9 Tulla-Bodyke 1-5

On a damp evening in Feakle, Feakle-Kilanena emerged as victors in a lively encounter. 15 minutes into this contest, the sides were deadlocked at 0-02 a piece but Feakle-Killanena pressed the acceleration and flew into a 1-04 to 0-02 lead.

Tulla/Bodyke instantly struck back with an Orla O’Brien goal. who hit the back of the net and Alex O’Sullivan left the minimal between the sides when she fired over but that’s as close as they got, Feakle/Killanena notched themselves another 1-03 in quick succession to leave the half time score, Feakle/Killanena 2-7 Tulla/Bodyke 1-3.

The second half was a low scoring affair compared to the first with Feakle/Killanena again dominant and scored 1-2 before Tulla/Bodykes Bridin Dinan was on target with a point from play and a free.  Shauna Doyle prevented any more goals being conceded. Kaylee Cahill, Bridin Dinan, Aoife Floyd and Rachel Murray kept the pressure on for Tulla-Boydke all the way to the full-time whistle. 3-9 to 1-5.

St Josephs 5-5 Truagh Clonlara 1-6

St Josephs Doora-Barefield overcame Truagh in their opening fixture of the u16A Championship last Wednesday. With the wind at their backs in the opening half, Truagh led 0-05 to 1-01. But St Joseph’s utilised the gale and tagged on 4-4 in 30 minute to send home local supporters happy.

Eire Og 9-12 Corofin 6-3
Venue: Corofin
Éire Óg defeated hosts Corofin in this u16B fixture last Tuesday evening. This match was entertaining but also nail biting for both sets of supporters after 60 minutes of good quality camogie. Emma Liu, Amy and Elizabeth Russell and a bracefrom Olivia Tuohy helped the Townies into a led, 5-06 to 2-03 at the break.

Second half goals from Ellie Harrison, Lizzy Roche, Cliodhna O’Dea and Aoife Madigan weren’t enough as Eire Og ran out 18 point winners.

Éire Óg take on Sixmilebridge in the next round while Corofin will face Newmarket on Fergus.

Ballyea 6-5 Broadford 6-1

Two-evenly matched teams faced each other in an ideal evening for camogie. There was very little between these teams throughout this goal fest contest.
Broadford started brightly, Allie Troy scoring a goal inside 60 seconds.

Ballyea replied with a goal by Emily Barry. Laura Carmody and Lauren Costello goals pushed Ballyea further ahead, leaving the half-time score Ballyea 3-1, Broadford 2-0.
The two sides traded goals soon after the start of the second half.  Broadford kept them well in the game when Annalee Marsh bagged herself two second half goals and clawked Broadford back into contention.  But a final goal scored by Tara Kelly gave Ballyea the win with a score of 6-5 to Broadford’s 6-1.

Kilmaley chalked down a 100% win rate in Championship when they scored a massive 3-17 to Kilkishen’s 1-05. Kilmaley’s pace worked a treat and this was the architect to Kilkishen’s downfall. The under 16 championship got off to a riveting start with a tough battle between two well matched teams in Cratloe with the final score not reflecting how hard fought it was.  This was a game of two halves, with neither team gaining an advantage in the first thirty minutes, but the East Clare visitors, who recently won the Minor C championship, were the stronger in the second half, with a final score of 2-7 to 0-2.
Gretta Hickey and Niamh O’Leary were the only two scorers in the opening half,with the scoreline 0-01 to 0-01
In the second half Cait Keenan scored both goals for her side to register a 2-7 to 0-02 win for Whitegate over Cratloe .

Clooney-Quin got their u16 campaign of to a great start when they hosted clarecastle during the week.
The foundation for the win was laid in the first half when Clooney-Quin scored 3-11 without reply. The home sides scores coming from Sinead McGee 1-5, Moya Dunne 0-2, Roisin Keogh 0-2, Rachel Begg 1-1, Rebecca Keane 1-0 and Emer Moynihan  0-1.
Clarecastle fought hard in the second and scored 3-02 without reply. Rachel Begg added a late goal for Clooney-Quin. Emma Considine, Michelle Meere,  Niamh McGee and Mary Conneally played well for Clooney.

This week saw round three of the U13 Championship get underway. Scariff-Ogonnelloe, Feakle-Killanena, Broadford and Ballyea enjoyed victories over their respective opposition.

U13A
Scariff Ogonnelloe 3-9 Inagh Kilnamona 0-1

This was a game of one half, as all 19 points in total were scored in the opening half. Scarriff-Ogonnelloe raced into an assailable lead and in truth Inagh-Kilnamona had lost this game in the first half. Inagh Kilnamona’s only point also came before the half time whistle. Aideen hickey gave a stellar display for the East Clare side , finishing off the match with a personal tally of 3-04.

Truagh enjoyed a home victory over St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield last Tuesday. Both sides fought hard in a low scoring affair. Truagh now face Scarriff-Ogonnolloe next Sunday while St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield play Inagh-Kilnamona to redeem their last outing.

U13B
Feakle/Killanena 4-5 Eire Og 3-1
Feakle/Killanena ran out victorious in a close contest against Eire Og in Feakle. Phoebe Boateng opened the scoring with a goal inside of the opening minute.
Within a minute, the sides were level as Feakle/ Killanena restored parity.
The east Clare side pegged on three points to cancel out Boeteng’s point to leave the half-time score 1-03 to1-01 in favour of Feakle/Killanena.

The second half was a great display of hard work & skill from both teams as they battled to take the points from this meeting. The sides traded goals in the opening five minutes, but, a purple patch for the hosts saw them surge into six point lead. Éire Óg tried hard and while Jodie Russell, Jamila Liani and Aoibheann Hahessy delivered good ball to the inside forwards, some of their shots went to the wrong side of the posts. Phoebe Boateng completed a hat trick of goals with six minutes left to play, leaving just three points between the sides, but, it was the hosts that drove on, notching up a further 1-01, giving them the win on a scoreline of 4-05 to 3-01.

Broadford outclassed hosts Cratloe last Sunday evening in this 13C Championship clash.Cratloe found the net early on but Broadford fought back with goals for Ella Ryan Meaney and Isabel O’Connell. Both sides ebbed and frowed, Broadford entended their lead courtesy of Kathy O’Farrell, Ella Ryan Maney and Beatrice Vaughan.

Ballyea 5-1 Parteen 1-0

Ballyea came out on top in the third round of the U13C Championship on Sunday evening in windy conditions in Parteen. Ballyea opened the scoring in the tenth minute with a goal from Aisling Costello, this was soon answered by Aisling Cooney who raised the green flag for Parteen. Both teams fought very hard for every ball but Ballyea managed to get the breaks adding a further two goals leaving half time score 3-0 to 1-0. In the opening minutes  of the second half the visitors were first on the scoreboard with a goal from Emma Hogan which ensured their side remained in front which was followed by a pointed free from Stella Quillivan. In the final ten minutes of play
Ballyea added another goal by Costello to put them further ahead. Credit due to Parteens Sarah Connelly and Ellie Williamson who battled very hard throughout and also to Ballyea’s strong defensive work who impressed  from Kaylea Kelly, Molly McMahon and Hannah Mai Neylon
