Clare Water Safety and the Freagh Castle Clean Coast group in West Clare have beaten off competition from all over Ireland to win the Ocean Hero Beach Clean of the Year Award in recognition of their coastal cleanup near Miltown Malbay in early 2016.

Beachgoers in the Banner County are being warned to dispose of their litter in a safe manner or prepare to fines ranging from €150 to €3000.

With forecasts of continued dry and warm weather over the coming days and the June Bank Holiday Weekend, members of the public are being urged to be extra vigilant when participating in water-based activities.

Nine Clare beaches have been awarded the prestigious International Blue Flag by An Taisce.
