Two people were rescued this afternoon after their boat ran aground on Lough Derg.
Watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue sub centre on Valentia Island in Kerry were alerted to the incident at around 1.15pm and in turn requested the Killaloe unit of the service to respond.
A 15ft punt, with two persons on board, was reported to have run aground North of Derrycastle close to the Tipperary shore.
Coast Guard volunteers launched a boat from their base at Pier Head, Killaloe and made their way to locate casualty vessel. On arrival in the area, they quickly located the punt and found that the two persons on board were safe and well.
The vessel was taken on tow back to Killaloe where other Coast Guard volunteers were also on hand to assist with the safe mooring of the vessel. Once the punt had been safely tied up, rescuers were stood down and returned to their base.
