The local authority has confirmed: “Following additional investigative sampling and on the advice of the HSE, Clare County Council has today lifted the Advisory Notices at both Spanish Point and Kilkee.

In accordance with An Taisce’s Blue Flag programme, the Blue Flags will be reinstated at both locations.”

Clare County Council has issued an Advisory Notice, advising people not to swim at Kilkee Beach, the second such incident at a Clare beach this week.

In a statement this afternoon, the local authority said: “On the advice of the HSE, Clare County Council has today (June 5, 2025) issued an Advisory Notice with advice not to swim at Kilkee Beach until further notice.

The restriction has been introduced after the results of routine bathing water samples showed elevated levels of bacteria.

Run-off from the catchment after exceptionally heavy rainfall is a likely cause of the elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

In accordance with An Taisce’s Blue Flag programme, the Blue Flag at this bathing area will be removed until such time as the water quality improves.”

Yesterday, a similar notice was issued for Spanish Point Beach.
