A search and rescue operation was mounted in West Clare this evening following reports that two people had gotten into difficulty while swimming.
The alarm was raised at around 8.20pm when watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry received reports of an unfolding incident at Spanish Point.
The Doolin and Kilkee units of the Irish Coast Guard and the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter were all tasked to the incident. Gardaí also attended the scene.
While initial reports suggested that two people were in trouble, it’s understood that only one person was in difficulty and that a swimmer and surfer had gone to his assistance and brought him ashore.
On arrival at the scene, Coast Guard first responders from Kilkee located and assessed the man before transporting him by road to a nearby school where Rescue 115 had landed.
The casualty was further assessed by the helicopter’s paramedic but and was found not to require hospitalisation.
The operation was stood down at around 9.30pm.
