The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard has towed a boat to safety after it got into difficulty this afternoon.
There were two people on board the 19-foot lake boat which was reported to have lost engine power and became stuck at the Eel Weir under the old bridge linking Ballina Co Tipperary and Killaloe in Clare.
The alarm was raised at 12.25pm when watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry received a call about the incident.
The Killaloe Coast Guard unit was tasked and launched a boat from their nearby station at Pier Head while a shore team also responded the incident by road.
After arriving on scene, a risk assessment was carried out by the Coast Guard boat crew. The rescue vessel was positioned upwind of the bridge holding off against the strong flow while the crew passed a tow line to the occupants of the lake boat.
Once the line was secured, the casualty craft was successfully towed to safety.
