Gardaí warn of ATM and shop terminal skimming

Gardaí have issued a warning to the public to be aware of the possibility that ATMs or shop credit card terminals may be rigged in order to steal customers details.

Gardaí in Ennis are investigating an incident of Fraud that occurred last Thursday the 23rd April.

An injured party had their bank card skimmed. This means that a small electronic device was placed over a legitimate card readers at ATM’s or at shop terminals to steal data from card’s magnetic strip.

Gardaí are advising the public to “inspect ATM machines before you use them and to cover your pin.”

Meanwhile, it has come to An Garda Síochána’s attention that members of the public are being contacted by a person or persons purporting to be from the Financial Intelligence Unit Ireland and requesting personal and confidential information concerning their financial affairs.

This Person produced identification purporting to be a Financial Intelligence Unit Agent – this ID is fake.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The Financial Intelligence Unit will not contact any person directly seeking personal financial details.”
