Shannon-bound flight returns to Newark with technical issue

A flight from the United States to Shannon was forced to return to its airport of origin after the crew declared an emergency shortly after take-off.

United Airlines flight UA-270 departed from Newark Airport in New Jersey shortly after 4.00am (Irish time) today. There were 176 passengers and crew on board.

Soon after departure the flight crew reported an issue to air traffic controllers and stopped their climb at 27,000ft. A short time later, the crew declared an emergency and requested clearance to return to Newark. It’s understood the crew reported an issue with a probe heater.

The Boeing 757-224 jet returned to Newark where it landed safely about an hour after departure. The flight was met by airport emergency vehicles who accompanied the aircraft to its parking position.

A replacement plane departed Newark at around 8.35am (Irish time) arriving in Shannon at approximately 2.30pm (local time). The original flight was scheduled to land in Shannon at 10.15am.
