A transatlantic jet has diverted to Shannon Airport this evening after the crew reported a technical problem.
American Airlines flight AA-141 was travelling from London’s Heathrow Airport to JFK International Airport with 100 passengers and crew on board.
The Boeing 777-200(ER) jet was about 300 kilometres south west of Shannon at around 9.40pm when the crew made the decision to turn around and divert.
The crew advised controllers they had an issue with a “battery discharging” and had been advised to divert to the nearest airport.
Once cleared to turn around the crew immediately began descending from 40,000 feet as it made its way towards Shannon.
The flight landed safely at 10.10pm and taxied to the terminal where engineers were waiting to investigate the matter.
Update: 17/06/16 – 9.15am
The flight will resume its journey later today while some passengers are being accommodated on another service from Shannon to New York.
